Hernia Repair Procedures
Surgical hernia repair procedures
Approximately 600,000 hernia repair operations are performed annually in the United States. The hernia repair procedures or surgical hernia repair can be performed through either an open or laparoscopic technique. There have been many techniques developed over the last hundred years to treat hernias. Over time, there has been an evolution to what is called a ‘tension free’ technique which is now the current standard method used by most surgeons.
Hernia repair technique
The ‘tension free’ hernia repair technique involves using a piece of synthetic mesh to help bridge the hernia defect. The exact type and shape of mesh used will vary based on the hernia type and location. Following mesh implantation, the body will grow new tissue into the spaces within the mesh to reinforce the surgical repair. Use of mesh during some of these repairs has been shown to reduce the possibility of hernia recurrence.
